CHORLTON SHOPPING CENTRE REGENERATION

We’ve been selected to design a new future for the Chorlton Shopping Centre

We are delighted to have been selected by the Greater Manchester Pension Fund as development partner to design and deliver a new future for the Chorlton Shopping Centre site in South Manchester.

The 3.2 acre site, bounded by Barlow Moor Road, Wilbraham Road and Nicolas Road, comprises of the shopping precinct, together with Graeme House and an adjoining 200 space surface car park.

The brief is to create a thriving and sustainable neighbourhood that captures the spirit of Chorlton, with a mix of new housing and shops together with new public spaces and cycle routes.

PJ Livesey development director, James Woodmansee, said: “This is a huge opportunity but also a huge challenge to get right and it has to meet the needs of the Chorlton community.

“We want it to be the centrepiece of the neighbourhood, a place where people come to shop, to meet and to live, with a range of high quality housing available to meet all needs.

“This new partnership marks the start of new life for the precinct site, and it also marks the start of extensive consultation about what that new life should be and we want local people to help us shape that.”

Formal public consultation will begin later in the year and existing retailers will continue to trade as normal during this process.

Gareth Conroy of Avison Young, property managers to The Greater Manchester Pension Fund, added “GMPF look forward to working in partnership with PJ Livesey to deliver an exceptional development in this key location. Sustainability will be a focus of the project and we look

forward to evolving the existing development framework to create something special which has a positive impact on Chorlton.

“The project is further evidence of GMPF’s continued investment within Greater Manchester, helping to stimulate the local economy whilst at the same time delivering much needed new homes.”

SUPPORTING THE CHRISTIE

And all of their fantastic work

We were very proud to be asked by The Christie Hospital to take part in a film for its annual review of the year about the life-changing work that the hospital does and the importance of charitable fundraising.

In 2021 the entire PJ Livesey company got involved travelling 25,000 miles around the world for our colleague Ralph Brocklehurst and raised more than £11,000 to help the hospital continue its pioneering work.

Managing Director Georgina Lynch went to visit The Christie’s new facility at Macclesfield and spoke about the wonderful treatment received by Ralph who sadly passed away last summer.

Georgina said: “The care Ralph received at The Christie was world class and we will continue to support this amazing charity.

“It was the first time I had visited the new Macclesfield site and it was both inspiring and humbling to be there and meet staff and patients and hear

their stories. It is obvious that every penny is vitally important and I am so grateful we have such expert care within our community.

“I was proud to be asked to take part in the film on behalf of PJ Livesey and it was my way of both honouring Ralph and thanking every member of staff and everyone else who helped us raise money for such a wonderful organisation.”

PLANS TO BE REVEALED FOR LEGACY SITE IN YORK

After detailed discussions with Historic England, York City Council and stakeholders we can now share detailed proposals for The Heslington Road Estate in York.

Consultation Open Days will be held at the site next week and we look forward to getting people’s feedback and views.

The 13-acre estate was integral to the pioneering work of The Retreat, established in 1796 by Quaker William Tuke, who believed physical and mental health were linked and created a place where the grounds offered recreation facilities to support mental health care.

It was brought to market when in-patient services on the site ceased and new centres of excellence for outpatients established in other locations in addition to Heslington Road.

Redevelopment of the buildings to create a high quality residential scheme is the most appropriate way of securing the long-term future of these significant buildings and the wider site.

PJ Livesey board director, James Woodmansee, said: “Ideas have been developed in consultation with heritage experts and stakeholders over the last 10 months and we are now at a stage where we can share them with neighbours and the wider community.

“We believe this is a unique opportunity to create a really special residential scheme, preserving the legacy of William Tuke, not just with the buildings but with the grounds.

“We are very keen to get feedback on our plans and look forward to hearing people’s views as we move forward with proposals.”

The proposals in brief:

• Conversion of the main hospital complex into 65-75 homes
• Conversion of Garrow Hill House into 6-8 homes
• Conversion of Home Farm into 2-5 homes
• Conversion of Spring Lodge, East Villa and Garrow Hill Coach House into individual homes
• The conversion of the former Recreation Hall to a residents’ Club Room that could also be used by the community
• Construction of 10-20 new build, family homes
• Extensive landscape restoration throughout the site and a dedicated Heritage Trail

LANDSCAPE TOUR OF THE RETREAT ESTATE

Book onto a ‘Talk and Tour’ event for free and explore this exceptional site

We are hosting a day long series of tours around the grounds of The Retreat estate on Heslington Road at York to explore how the land has changed and developed over the years.

Landscape architects Randall Thorp are working with us on future proposals for the estate and will discuss how the 13-acre estate has gone from turnip field to formal garden and orchard and what influenced the changes.

The estate was integral to the work of The Retreat, established in 1796 by Quaker William Tuke, who believed mental health was linked with physical activity and created a place where the grounds offered recreation facilities to support the mental health care.

In patient services offered by The Retreat closed in 2018 and new centres of excellence for outpatients have been established in other locations in addition to Heslington Road.

We are hoping to convert the Grade II * listed buildings to residential use with the majority of the grounds opened up to the public.

There are proposals for a heritage trail around the perimeter and plans for a peace and tranquillity garden. The Quaker burial ground will be unaffected and continue.

Randall Thorp partner Dick Longdin said: “The Heslington Road estate is a landscape treasure and because of its previous sensitive use one that many people in York are unaware of. The task now is to open as much of the grounds as possible for the public to enjoy while retaining private spaces for the new residents.”

PJ Livesey Group joint managing director Georgina Lynch said: “Heslington Road is a special place and we want to respect and celebrate its heritage while also looking at how it can be opened and maintained for wider use.”

Three ‘Talk and Tour’ events will take place on Saturday June 25th starting at 10am – 12.30pm and 2.30pm.

The tours are free but places must be reserved through Eventbrite

SPECIAL DELIVERY FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN

We were pleased to support the work of the PTA at Cavendish Road Primary School

We were pleased to support the work of the PTA at Cavendish Road Primary School in Didsbury by providing each pupil with a new reading book for Christmas – and very grateful to Santa for taking time out to deliver them in person on the day of the school’s Xmas Fair. Managing Director Georgina Lynch said: “The joy of reading is really important and we hope all the children enjoy their books.
“Schools and teachers have had a tough time over the last two years and we were pleased to support the work of the PTA as it continues to organise the extra activities and treats that are so appreciated. “We have delivered many schemes in Didsbury and it continues to be one of Manchester’s most popular areas for many reasons – including great schools.”

25,000 MILES AROUND THE WORLD

We did it! We went Around the World for Ralph and raised money for the Christie Charity

The amazing PJ Livesey Team’s Round the World challenge ended with an incredible 24-hour-cyclathon at company headquarters to clock up the final 1,000 of the 25,000-mile journey

And it was wonderful that director Ralph Brocklehurst got the team over the finish line by cycling the last mile to bring us back home safely.

It followed an epic effort by director Craig Lynch and construction operations manager Gareth Whittaker who spent 24 hours in the saddle cycling around the clock. They were supported throughout the day and night by colleagues and we ended with a well-deserved party.

Thanks to the enormous efforts of everyone at PJ Livesey, supported by donations from friends, family, contractors, and suppliers we have raised more than £11,000 for The Christie Hospital Charity.

We would like to thank everyone for every single mile walked, run, cycled or swum and for every penny donated. The amount has already far exceeded our initial target but The Christie fundraising has been affected badly by the lack of events over the last year and we intend to leave the Fundraising page open until the end of June.

Georgina Livesey said: “It has been the most incredible journey around the world – both inspiring and humbling. I am so proud of the team and the effort everyone has put in both to do the miles and raise this incredible amount to support the work of such a great hospital. The treatment and care it provides for so many people like our colleague Ralph is world-class. It was typical of his indomitable spirit and strength that he wanted to get us over the finish line and play his part in completing the challenge which he inspired.” Anna McIntosh, major relationships development manager, at The Christie, was on hand to accept a cheque on behalf of the charity.
