THE HISTORY

A PLACE OF REMEMBRANCE

The King’s School, Macclesfield is one of England’s oldest and most distinguished schools, with a proud history spanning more than 500 years. Founded in 1502 by Sir John Percyvale, a Macclesfield-born Lord Mayor of London, the school has been at the heart of education in the town for centuries.

Re-founded in 1552 by King Edward VI as the Free Grammar School of King Edward VI, the school continued to grow and develop, moving to its well-known Cumberland Street site in 1844. Over the years it evolved into a leading independent school, becoming fully independent in 1966.

A striking feature of the historic site is the Remembrance Gates, a lasting tribute to former pupils who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars, reflecting the school’s deep sense of heritage and community.

In 2020, the school moved to a new campus near Prestbury, continuing its long educational tradition in Macclesfield.
