TERRY FAMILY NOSTALGIC RETURN

Special Visitors

We welcomed some very special visitors to The Residence at York to see first hand how the former Terry’s Chocolate Factory is transforming into a beautiful residential building.

Betty Lawrie is the daughter of Noel and Kathleen Terry who originally commissioned the art deco building in the 1920s and expanded chocolate making on the Bishopsthorpe Road site developing The ‘Chocolate Orange’ and ‘Terry’s Old Gold’.

Betty’s childhood home was ‘Goddards’ , a short walk from the factory across York Racecourse and she recalled how they could see the famous Terry’s clock tower from the garden and visiting the factory to see the famous chocolates being produced and also revealed how her father disliked horse racing despite the house neighbouring the racecourse.

Betty, now 91, was accompanied by her daughter Jean Kuipers, and her niece Louise Morgan-Williams, the daughter of her late brother Peter.

The cousins remembered childhood escapades and the very special Easter Eggs that were made for the grandchildren containing individual fondant filled animal shaped chocolates and also visiting the factory floor as children.

Jean said: “We all agree it is rather wonderful the building is being saved and inside it is now unrecognisable as a factory. We were delighted to be invited to come and look and the spaces being created are lovely. It was great fun to go up on what had been the roof and see the views from the penthouse. Quite spectacular.

“My mother and I now live in in the South but come back to York at least once a year as it is a place full of happy memories for us and it was lovely to visit the building and remember.”

The family was welcomed by PJL managing director Peter Livesey and director James Woodmansee.

Peter said: ”We are very proud of what we are creating at Terry’s and it was a privilege to show the family how it is being transformed. Their family name will always be associated with York and it was incredibly interesting to hear more about the history of the company and personal anecdotes that brought it to life.”

COMPANY CHARITY CHALLENGE

The PJ Livesey group take on tough mudder

Twenty-five tackled the Tough Mudder course in Manchester and raised a truly magnificent £7,700 for the Mustard Tree charity. It was great fun, great teamwork and all for a great cause.

A Significant Donation Adrian Nottingham, CEO, of the Mustard Tree said: “We would like to thank everyone at PJ Livesey and everyone who sponsored them. This significant donation allows us to continue the work we do in supporting those who are most vulnerable. With annual increases in homelessness and poverty in Manchester, we value every offer of support and every donation, being acutely aware that we couldn’t continue to make a difference in the lives of those who come to us for help without the partnership of like-minded people.”

We hope to be working with the Mustard Tree again in the future to support the amazing work the charity does.

A huge thank you to all our intrepid staff who took part in this year’s very tough, very muddy, company charity challenge.

DITCHINGHAM DISCOVERY

Brick wall of friendship

During our public consultation meetings we spoke to many ex workers of various ages from the Maltings and were made aware of a brick wall inscribed with the names and addresses of Americans based there during the war.

Surviving a massive fire in 1999 the 47 bricks from the ‘Wall of friendship’ were saved before the demolition of that part of the building and are now on display at Flixton.

With over 150 mens names and details etched into the surface of these bricks, contact with existing family relatives has been able to be made and many have been linked to marriages in local churches.

Unfortunately we later discovered that there were several other bricks initialed by the ‘Rutter’ family on a building across the stream that we were

not made aware of and now believe to be totally demolished.

However in honor and memory of the Rutter family we have decided to name the access road into the development after them.

Although the bricks were lost hopefully this will keep the memory of there family alive.

We have been in contact with Carol Rutter whos father, grandfather and great grandfather worked at the Maltings. Intrigued by the history of the Maltings we cant wait to hear about her life there and tell her story to you.

Loving Life at The Residence, Lancaster

LOVING LIFE AT THE RESIDENCE

The residents love their new home

They say you fall in love with a property the moment you walk through the door – but Viv Savage knew she had found her dream home simply looking at a plan.

She immediately knew that a three bedroomed apartment in the landmark Lancaster Moor building would be perfect for her and her teenage children even though work on the building had barely begun and even though it was in complete contrast to their old home.

Viv explained: “Our house at the time was a rural dream, a converted barn down a single track lane, huge garden and its own vegetable patch and greenhouse. But circumstances changed and I was looking for a new home and decided to buy in Lancaster close to the children’s schools.

I had actually come to look at another site but drove past the sales office for The Residence and stopped to look at the conversion of Campbell House and I was blown away by the standard of the interior finish and the character of the properties but they had all been sold. So I went back and explained to the lovely Dan that I needed three bedrooms and he pointed out the options on the plans. I immediately loved the layout and space of one in the main wing and put a reservation down. It may have been rash as my old property was not even on the market but it just seemed right and so it has proved.”

The apartment sits at the front of the Grade II listed building and is split over two levels. On the first level is a spacious living area framed by huge original windows with ample room for two big sofas perfect for teenage lounging. The sophisticated wood kitchen with black granite work tops offers plenty of storage and space for cooking and is also large enough to accommodate a dining table.

From the entrance hall a half flight of stairs takes you to Viv’s bedroom suite with its feature window and large en-suite shower room. The top floor is the children’s domain with two bedrooms, one en-suite and a super cute main bathroom.

There is also an unexpected open-air terrace, with views over the roof tops to the dome of the Ashton Memorial in nearby Williamson Park – the perfect spot for a Sunday morning coffee.

Viv, who works in pharmaceutical sales, said: “I suppose my traditional option would have been a three bedroom house on an estate but that is so uninspiring. Here I have all the convenience if a new build together with history and character – I absolutely love it. It has such a sense of space and light and I feel very safe here. I feel totally at home and relaxed which is strange as it is such a contrast. But looking back the huge garden and the land had become a burden and the children had to be met from the bus as it was too far to walk especially in winter. Here they are much more independent and can walk to school and back and I am comfortable they are safe here if a meeting runs over. I have so much more time and if I do ever fancy growing veg again there are allotments just down the road!”

The developers, conservation specialists The PJ Livesey Group, are creating a range of homes at The Residence and are planning to increase the number of larger properties in coming phases to meet demand.

Sales director Georgina Livesey said: “We always want to create a mix of properties so The Residence is within the reach of everyone but we have seen a lot of interest from people wanting bigger units. Lancaster is a fantastic city with a lot going on and we are delighted that The Residence is becoming its premier residential location.”

And Viv praised the entire team at PJ Livesey for making the moving process easy and enjoyable. She said: “I used to visit site on a weekly basis to see how it was progressing and all the team from Dan and Margaret in sales through to the project manager, on-site workers and head office team have been fantastic. It has made a real difference to making the move.”

While Viv loves her new found freedom what is the reaction of the children? She said: “Teenagers never say a lot but my son has brought more mates back to see this place than he ever did to the old house. I guess that means he approves!”

Recognised as the best in the north west

The Residence – our conversion of the landmark Lancaster Moor hospital into unique and luxurious apartments has been named the Best Residential development in the North West in two prestigeous awards.

The judges looked at on-going works as well as completed apartments and talked to residents. And last week it was named best Residential Development at the highly regarded NW Insider Property Awards and the PJ Livesey Group was also highly commended in the Property Developer category.

Company chairman Peter Livesey said: “The Awards for Lancaster Moor are testament to the hard work and skill of the entire team involved in the project.
